Description
Summary:A scarce circa 1885 logo reprinted on a firm plastic (celluloid?) sheet with an image of a Mexican cowboy with gun in holster riding a spirited mustang, and with the words of the title. There are three sheets held together with a metal grommet punched into the top left corner; the picture appears on the first sheet. The grommet allows for a putting a small chain or string through it to make it suitable for hanging. It appears that the two attached sheets are to be written on for notes, etc. "Texas siftings" was an independent weekly humor magazine started in Austin in May 1881 by Alexander E. Sweet and John Armoy Knox. After a few unillustrated issues, a cartoonist, W. H. Caskie, was hired. Though it was established primarily as a humorous sheet, Texas Siftings contained some local and state news, and achieved a circulation of 100,000 by 1885. At first its contributors were mainly Texas writers, but later nationally known humorists and artists were added. The art work was done by Thomas Worth, a Currier and Ives artist, T. Ramsden, and Frank Bellew. (Condensed from vendor's description and from the article in the Handbook of Texas online, cited above.)
