| Item Description: | No title, approximately 1 inch excised from the top of the first leaf. Manuscript in ink of substantial portions of poem "The ladies defence, or, the bride-woman's counsellor answer'd : a poem in a dialogue between Sir John Brute, Sir William Loveall, Melissa, and a parson". Published: London, printed for John Deeve at Bernard's-Inn-Gate in Holborn, 1701. Manuscript probably originates as a commonplace book type transcription. Has many variations from the printed text, as well as shifting of parts of the text around. Begins at page 10 of the version published in 1701. Erroneously attributed to Mary Wollstonecraft with the name "Mary Woolstancroft" [sic] added at head of first page. The poem was originally printed anonymously. Written in response to a sermon on "conjugal duty" preached by John Sprint. cf. Dictionary of national biography. The sermon insists that women's entire duty in life is to love, honor, and be obedient to a husband. First published in 1699 as The female preacher. Published in 1700 as The female advocate, and in 1707 as The female preacher. cf. Cambridge bibliography of English literature. The Cushing Library/Rare Books copy was acquired with a reproduction of The ladies defence, which is marked to indicate which parts of the manuscript are present - The ladies defence, or, The bride-woman's counsellor answer'd : a poem in a dialogue between Sir John Brute, Sir William Loveall, Melissa, and a parson / written by a lady, Mary Lee Chudleigh.
