| Summary: | Is it possible to generalise about the beliefs, values and customs of a nation? Is there a national character - an Australian identity? Does the "typical Aussie" exist or is he (rarely she!) some mythical creation in the minds of our writers and advertisers? How is the changing nature of Australian culture affecting our beliefs, values and customs? This program explores possible answers to these questions. There are six themes in the program. Beliefs and Rituals looks at the diversity of beliefs in our pluralist society and how these influence our daily behaviour. Myths and Stereotypes defines the features that have been attributed to the Australian character and how this popular image has developed. Influences from the Past examines the accumulated layers of history that form our culture. Play the Game considers the role of sport in the lives of Australians. Identity Crises and Defining Values ask how our perceptions are being challenged and often redefined. Copyright - 2011 National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
