| Summary: | In the clips that follow you will see 10 different ways teachers might choose to interact with children during pretend play. Children not only practice familiar routines, but they also invent the scripts that guide how they pretend, such as ordering food in a restaurant, going to the doctor, or having a tea party. These child-authored scripts reveal children's understanding of what they have seen. That is, a child will act out the conventional routine in a manner that makes sense to her, makes sense given her assumptions about how the social world works. She may also change the script in order to accommodate more children into the play, to maintain the duration of the play, or to assure her own role as the leader of the play. Clearly we can learn a great deal about children's assumptions and their strategies for reaching different goals, but what does the teacher do once a pretend episode is under way? The question remains: what teacher-role might you recommend in what situation with what age children with what group dynamics? There are three criteria one might use to classify the teachers' strategies in these video clips: Is the teacher pretending along with the children? Is the teacher challenging the children to rethink something specific? Are the children and their teacher(s) revisiting their play after the fact? |
