| Summary: | This program takes viewers to New Zealand's South Island to discover landforms, landscapes, and ways that the environment is protected. Much of the island has been shaped by tectonic forces and carved by glaciers and ice action. Ecotourism and adventure tourism attract international visitors. National Parks and World Heritage Areas were created to protect sensitive and unique environments. This enhances the reputation of New Zealand for sustainable practices. Highlights include the Canterbury Plains surrounded by towering peaks of the Southern Alps. The causes and effects of the Christchurch earthquakes and mountain forming processes are examined. A flight in a light plane above the Alps and the summit of Mt. Aspiring captures the stunning alpine scenery. Glaciers and glacial lakes are visited as are the popular towns of Wanaka and Queenstown. The uses of rivers and valleys for adventure is shown in the jet boats and bungy jumping outside Queenstown. A fast boat ride across Lake Manapouri reveals more spectacular scenery on the way to Doubtful Sound for a breathtaking two day cruise on the second largest fiord in New Zealand. |
