Description
Summary:"One Breath at a Time" is a smoking prevention and community empowerment video. The 28 min documentary focuses on Native communities who are using progressive approaches in dealing with Tobacco misuse. Featuring native tobacco experts, health professionals, community workshops, personal testimonials and success stories - "One Breath at a Time" is one of the first documentaries to address the smoking issue from a Native American perspective. The video recognizes the sacred role tobacco has played in native communities for thousands of years, as well as social pressures affecting Native people; the program acknowledges that getting people to "quit" often means empowering whole communities. The video provides advise, solutions and examples of how communities can best approach the smoking and chewing of tobacco in their area- and create positive steps to get people on the road to good health. We meet, Native Urban Youth who discuss the reasons for smoking such as peer pressure and other social factors- this film presents workshops which address these questions and empower youth. A native doctor speaks about the physical health risks of smoking and chewing tobacco and high rates of tobacco-related illnesses amongst Native American people. "One Breath at Time" is aimed at native people of all ages and presents anti-smoking messages in a non-threatening and culturally-sensitive way- using the words of Native American speakers themselves.
