| Summary: | This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the interactionsbetween the heart and the brain in the field of cerebral ischemia. The main topics covered include the cardiovascular consequences of cerebral damage, cardioembolic stroke, and the association between coronary and carotid artery disease. Electrocardiographic changes, cardiac arrhythmias, and myocardial damage do in fact occur in a significant number of patients following stroke. At least on in six strokes is due to cardiogenic embolism. Coronary artery disease, often asymptomatic, is common in patientswith cerebrovascular disease, and since most patients with transient ischemic attacks eventually die of myocardial infarction. The aim of this book is to improve communication between the different disciplines and specialties: neurologists can no longer ignore the heart, and cardiologists must also consider the cerebral consequences of heart disease. |
