| Summary: | The central theme of this volume asks what trace elements have to do with disease and the preservation of health in human beings. The sixty-four contributions were selected from the special sessions of the 2nd Meeting of the International Society for Trace Element Research in Humans (ISTERH) held in Tokyo in 1989. Some of the topics discussed are the diagnosis of marginal zinc deficiency, the effects of trace elements on immunity and genetics, nutritional requirements and the problem of how to quantify trace elements. Deficiency symptoms of essential trace elements and corresponding treatment possibilites are examined. The dynamics of trace elements are extensively covered: their importance in patients suffering from neural, cardiovascular, hepatic, and other disorders, and their use in treatment modalities such as surgery, parenteral nutrition and dialysis. |
