Description
Summary:This atlas provides the first comprehensive analysis of cancer in Poland and thus enables the reader to compare the relevant data with those collected in other European countries. The authors discuss hypotheses which may help to explain some of the specific features found in certain areas and/or populations. The atlas sums up the epidemiological situation of cancer in Poland over a period spanning from 1963 - 1982. In 82 colored maps the geographical distribution of about 20 main cancer sites is presented, based on 49 voivodships, the basic administrative units of Poland. It thus fulfills two tasks of growing importance. Firstly, it meets the request from medical practitioners, research workers and political authorities for information on frequencies and spatial distributions of the different cancer sites. Secondly, it may promote the epidemiological research on causal factors determining cancer occurrence in Poland. The publication is the result of fruitful cooperation between the Maria Sklodoska-Curie Memorial Cancer Centre and Institute of Oncology in Warsaw and the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg.
