| Summary: | This review will be useful to those interested in the problems of medical genetics, mental disorders and their control. The book reviews the problems which exist in the field of genetics and psychiatry, including the role of gene defects, from the development of the disease to ethical issues in the application of genetic knowledge. It considers the possibilities offered by molecular genetic approaches to the prevention and control of mental disorders. The application of molecular genetic techniques has already led to the recognition of genes or chromosomal aberrations associated with selected mental disorders and this will continue in the future. Many DNA markers are known today, and some show a linkage with several of the more common mental illnesses, such as manic depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease. |
