Description
Summary:The volume incorporates a novel approach to anorexia nervosa as one of a spectrum of dyscontrol syndromes that also includes obesity and drug abuse. It attempts to develop an understanding of the psychological and developmental aspects of anorexia nervosa and its relation to other dyscontrol syndromes. In the author's view, masochistic behavior and ascetic attitudes can become addictions. It is the compulsive need to master drives and impulses that leads to the total control of the most vital drive, hunger. Biological, endocrinal, and autonomous elements relating to this behavior (including its anatomical, embryonal, physiological, and psychological dimensions and deviations) are carefully analyzed and related to the disturbances manifested in anorexia nervosa. Historical and transcultural aspects are also discussed in detail. In viewing anorexia nervosa as a self-induced malady, the volume will be of particular interest to clinicians and therapists concerned with the complex interaction between behavior and physical illness.
