Description
Summary:This is the first critical appraisal of cancer atlases published worldwide. Ten national cancer atlases, including the cancer mortality atlas of the European Community, are surveyed and compared. The value of these publications for future research is substantiated; however, the conceptual and practical problems are also demonstrated. Discussion of specific problems in documentation and statistics includes the relative value of incidence and mortality data for cancer mapping and its impact on cancer epidemiology. The need for international comparability of data coding is stressed, possibly by the use of ICD-O. This comprehensive presentation gives not only the current status of epidemiology as represented in cancer maps, but also the remaining problems, critical points, and further development possibilities.
