Summary:This book summarizes the results of the extensive pre-site investigations in the target areas Oberpfalz and Schwarzwald as well as the scientific objectives which provided the basis for the site-selection procedure. In 19 contributions of the various research groups involved in the pre-site investigations the present state of knowledge on the structure, composition, evolution, and geophysical characteristics of the Hercynian basement in both regions is documented. The drilling started late September 1987 near Windischeschenbach/Oberpfalz. A short communication of the first results obtained in the initial drilling phase is also included.
