| Summary: | The book represents a continuation of a series of books and meetings dealingwith the physiology and pathophysiology of control systems published during the last two decades. Preferentially, those control systems are treated which play a dominant role in the somato-vegetative adaptation to physical and psychical activation, i.e. the respiratory, the cardiovascular and the motor systems. In contrast to the majority ofpresent publications in these fields, the book places main emphasis not so much on the recent findings in each of these special areas, but rather on the interactions, correlations and coordinations between the systems, thus covering topics which are necessarily neglected by the current extremely specialized research. This intention was realized by the contribution of leading representatives from different specialized laboratories from many countries. In this way the different lists of references provide a good access to further, more special information. One main topic was the rhythmicity in the different systems as an indicator of interrelations and a principle of coordination. The individual contributions extend from cellular mechanisms and finer localization within the brain until mathematical treatment of complex systems and whole systems function. A final section deals with physiologicaland pathophysiological applications in man, as a new trend with rapidly growing clinical relevances. The book is dedicated to the memory of an important protagonists of integrative physiology, Chandler Mel Brooks, whoseconcluding article on "The essence of life" touches the basic principles of research on single mechanisms. |
