Die Idee von zerstörungsfreien Prüfverfahren von Material durch elektromagnetische Techniken ist vor mindestens 50 Jahren entstanden. Im Jahre 1983 begann eine Reihe von Symposien, die einen beachtlichen Erfolg nachweisen konnten. 225 Wissenschaftler aus 14 verschiedenen Ländern nahmen an dem 3. Symposium in Saarbrücken teil.
