Description
Summary:In the past there was no comprehensive book dealing with portal hypertension, an abnormal physiological state that can lead to serious complications with fatal consequences. In this book, both the basic aspects and clinical features of portal hypertension are described by foremost authorities. The authors examine the physiology of portal hypertension, its histological basis and various causes. The changes in portal hemodynamics and the methods for investigating such changes are thoroughly discussed. The various portal-systemic collateral routes and how to diagnosis portal hypertension and collaterals are shown. Clinical manifestations, endoscopy for esophageal varices, complications (particularly bleeding varices) and their management are critically evaluated. The information is practical so that the clinician will know what should be done immediately upon encountering a patient suffering from bleeding varices and what subsequent steps he should take. Basic investigators will obtain a complete picture of the physiological and hemodynamic aspects of portal hypertension.
