| Summary: | Annotation The 18 chapters in this volume review recent advances in the field of redox enzymology, and describe aspects of the mechanisms of electron and radical transfer in proteins. The volume begins with a theoretical treatment of biological electron transfer and descriptions of new key structures of soluble electron transfer proteins. Experimental studies of simple soluble systems based primarily on the quinoprotein and flavoprotein enzyme families are then introduced to illustrate concepts in the control of electron transfer reactions. Radical chemistry is also discussed in contributions on ribonucleotide reductase, vitamin B12-dependent reactions, soluble methane monooxygenase and peroxidase-catalyzed reactions. Chapters focused on nickel and molybdenum-containing enzymes consider the chemistries of complex redox centers and their role in biological redox reactions. Finally, advances in the understanding of membrane electron transfer through structural descriptions of key membrane- embedded proteins are discussed in chapters on bovine heart cytochrome 1, cytochrome oxidase and the reaction center complex from purple bacteria.
