| Summary: | This volume presents the latest developments in psychiatric epidemiology in the light of new investigations. Descriptive epidemiological studies on the relationship between social class and psychiatric disorder form the point of departure. Subsequently, various approaches in analytical epidemiological research are presented which attempt to determine to what extent social causation or social selection processes can be said to be responsible for the higher rates of psychiatric disorder in lower social strata. In the next section studies are reported which investigate the influence of social stress on the onset and course of various forms of psychiatric disorder. Social stress is conceived as stressful life events and as difficult life situations which are sustained over a long time (e.g. noisome occupational conditions, unemployment). Finally, the book presents the first attempts to link the concepts of social class and social stress. |
