Modeled after a 1787 medal issued by English potter and fervent abolitionist Josiah Wedgewood, the obverse portrays a "supplicant slave", a black man in chains on one knee, his arms in shackles with the legend "Am I not a man and a brother". The reverse bears the clasped hands of brotherhood with the legend "May slavery & oppression cease throughout the world". Likely issued by the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade established in 1787. |
