We do not need new principles. For that matter, there are no new principles. Like everyone else facing new conditions, we need to go back to the oldest of general theories for our guides. We must try to see what truths about humanity and society have been found most enduring and comforting and worth preserving, and then to try to apply them honestly to the changed family life of the present day. About half the articles which follow appeared in a much abridged form in To-day's Magazine. With little notion that they contained anything of more than passing interest, I was astonished by the number of letters they called out, and by the surprise which the application of old principles of social living to contemporary domestic problems seemed to awaken in many readers.
