Description
Summary:"The second volume of Thomas Laycock's "Mind and brain: Or, the correlations of consciousness and organisation; with their applications to philosophy, zoology, mental pathology, and the practice of medicine" consists of three parts: Part IV, which covers the principles of a scientific psychology--including chapters on the substratum of conscious mind, the fundamental correlations of life and consciousness, and correlations of the desires and feelings with the laws of vital action; Part V, which details the principles of a mental physiology--including chapters on the encephalon as the seat of the unifying processes of life and thought, an historical review of researches into the law of cerebral differentiation with unity of function, and the principles of a physiological classification of vital and mental phenomena in correlation; and Part VI, which discusses the principles of mental organology--including chapters on the general doctrines of the functions, morphology and structure of the nervous system, the dynamic and structural elements of the nervous system, and evolution in development and function of the nervous system. Additionally, an appendix offering an examination of Dr Carpenter's claim of priority as to the discovery of the law of unconscious cerebral action, is also presented in the current volume."
