| Summary: | "There are three choices an author has to make in presenting the field of personality and adjustment in the limited space of one hundred or so pages. First, he can offer a systematic viewpoint within which to encompass the field, either borrowing from one of the many theoretical treatments available, or creating a new one of his own. Second, he can attempt to summarize or review the theories and empirical findings that make up the subject matter of the field. Third, he can survey the field from the point of view of the main problems and issues, showing the ways they are resolved; in this approach he would bring in research findings only to illustrate these matters, and to serve as prototypes of the scientific efforts designed to deal with them. I have adopted the third solution for this book in the conviction that the greatest sense of order and the broadest perspective can be achieved by discussing the main issues personality theorists have attempted to resolve, the issues which have been the subject of empirical research. What emerges, then, is an introduction to a rich world of ideas for the person who wishes to know how and why as well as what. I hope that the reader, armed with an awareness of the questions and problems provided here, will make further and more meaningful explorations into man's knowledge and speculations about personality and adjustment"--Preface.
