Description
Summary:"In February, 1953, a research proposal entitled <xh:i>Perceptual Changes in Psychopathology</xh:i> was approved by the Veterans Administration, and under the terms of this proposal a continuing research program was established in the Fall of that year at the East Orange Veterans Administration Hospital. This book represents a progress report on this project. It investigates experimentally the perceptual distortions which are encountered in certain types of psychopathology and the perceptual changes which occur in the course of psychotherapy, with the aim of adding immediately to the empirical knowledge of this area and ultimately leading to a comprehensive theory of perceptual change, particularly as related to psychopathology. Two ways of studying perceptual change have been carried out concurrently. These are represented in the two sections into which the book has been divided. First, we have attempted to work out a theory of perceptual change as it relates to over-all personality functioning and to develop a suitable experimental methodology by which such a theory can be tested in the laboratory and related to clinical practice. Second, a number of different specific aspects of perceptual change have been investigated. Numerous variables, processes, and determinants have been selected; the individual reports represent an interest both in devising suitable methodology and in arriving at substantive findings"--Preface.
