| Summary: | In this essay the author proposes to present and support a generalization about the nature of disease in man. [...] The experimental evidence on which this view is founded was gathered in collaboration with many colleagues whose original contributions are listed in the bibliography. In most of these communications "stress," in keeping with common usage, became the equivalent of load, external force, or pressure. However, if the word "stress" is to enter the language of biological science, responsibilities concerning its meaning are entailed, especially because it has long been defined and used in the physical sciences. In this thesis, as it has been defined in mechanics, "stress" is the internal or resisting force brought into action in parts by external forces or loads. [...] From incidents at the bedside and in the laboratory portraying the relationship of specific situations, attitudes, emotions and bodily diseases, the monograph moves toward considerations of disease arising in populations undergoing serious deprivations and sudden or violent social changes. [...] An attempt has been made in these pages to carry this concept of disease one step further. It is suggested that man, confronted by threats, especially as they involve values and goals, initiates responses inappropriate in kind as well as in magnitude. Such reactions, integrated for one protective purpose, and thus inappropriately used for another, can damage or destroy him. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2009 APA, all rights reserved). |
