Essentially, it is a slightly edited transcript of lectures presented in 1961 and 1962 to first year psychology graduate students at Wayne State University in a required General Psychology Proseminar. Since inquiry disclosed no brief and comprehensive presentation of the history or of the methods of physiological psychology and since the time allotment for the physiological psychology material was so abbreviated, it was deemed appropriate to reduce the lectures on history and methods to written form with the purpose of preserving more class time for discussing other topics--especially the psychophysiology of learning. The history of the field as herein outlined is basically a factual account and has been organized with an emphasis on chronological succession"--Preface.
