Description
Summary:"While my primary object in this edition has been, as before, to give a detailed account of my own investigations, I have endeavoured to present to the reader a systematic exposition of the functions of the brain and central nervous system in accordance with what seem to me, after extensive and critical survey, the best established facts of recent physiological and pathological research. The book has been almost entirely re-written; a good deal has been added; and not a few modifications have been made, chiefly in matters of detail and methods of explanation. The principal doctrines formerly advocated in respect to the localisation of cerebral functions are maintained in all essentials unchanged. My chief object in this book has been to present to the student of physiology and psychology a systematic exposition of the bearing of my own experiments on the functions of the brain. To do this satisfactorily I have thought it necessary to consider the functions of the cerebro-spinal system in general, with the view more especially of pointing out the mutual relations between the higher and the lower nerve centres. Throughout I have aimed at a concise digest rather than an encyclopedic account of the various researches by which our knowledge of the brain and spinal cord has been built up"--Preface.
