| Summary: | "When a rat colony was first started at the Medical College of Virginia, we were greatly handicapped by the lack of a satisfactory manual on the care of rats. The excellent monograph on the Wistar colony by Greenman and Duhring is not suited to the average need. Consequently most of the questions which arose had to be solved by the method of trial and error, the results of which form this publication. This is therefore a report of our experiences rather than a discussion of the entire field, and includes that information of which we were in dire need when starting the colony. Minor details that may seem self-evident to an experienced person, often appear very obscure to beginners. I am laboring under no delusions as to my peculiar capacity for treating this subject. However, since those who are far more experienced than I have not published their methods in detail, I believe that the need for such an elementary book may justify my attempt to assist those who wish to start a rat colony, or who may be dissatisfied with their present methods. We have wasted so much time and money in trying and rejecting various procedures, that I trust this book may save others from a similar experience, and perhaps may serve to combat such prevalent ideas as that rats need ample light and will not thrive in basements. I have attempted to write as simply as possible, at the expense of boring many of my readers, in order to make this a manual which could be given a technician totally unfamiliar with rats and which would be complete enough to enable him to learn the job by himself"--Book.
