Actually, I was quite wary of doing a book on the subject of charm. There is something revolting in my attempting to write about it, but no one asked me to write on Zen Buddhism, and I do have a compulsion to try anything once. I think the only charm worth a plugged subway token is genuine charm--the charm that emanates from a person because he is fully himself. Counterfeit charm is worse than none at all. That's why this subject will be covered in two steps: first, getting at those things which stop you from being yourself; second, presenting some ideas that might be helpful in polishing the charm you have.
