| Summary: | A widowed mother and homemaker in her forties, with three children aged 15, 16, and 28, seeks counseling for depression and feeling overwhelmed since the loss of her husband four years ago. Her 16-year-old son has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and the client is concerned about his escalating mood swings and acting out. In this, the first of six sessions, the therapist elicits information about the client's current life situation, family responsibilities, and the feelings that have brought her into therapy. He validates her feelings, particularly given the changes that have taken place in the client's life, and he begins to help her think through her future goals, given that she will eventually need to find full-time work in order to support the family. The therapist gives the client two feedback forms to complete for him before the next session.
