Description
Summary:In this this final of three sessions, counseling psychologist Dr. Mark L. Savickas works with a young adult Caucasian male client who recently left one college and is seeking renewed educational and career direction and motivation. Dr. Savickas opens space for the client to share thoughts and new actions over the past week while setting a tone of continuity to the narrative counseling work. The therapist consolidates the work of the sessions, using metaphors from the client's early experiences to convey understanding of the client's concern about being on the "right path" as well as his intensity in following his goals once he is assured of them. The counseling process serves a validating purpose in this respect. Dr. Savickas observes the importance of finding a "coach" or mentor, which has been essential to the client's past success and explores the client's inhibition about asking for help. In the psychotherapeutic process, the therapist serves as a transitional coach and normalizes the client's fears of rejection to help him overcome his difficulties in taking the next steps of finding a job and pursuing his academic and career plans.
