| Summary: | Dr. Susan H. McDaniel works with a young couple struggling to create a loving environment for themselves and their young son. Their goals for therapy include improving their communication skills through respect and patience, learning to be open about their feelings, and learning to compromise. In this session Dr. McDaniel explains the structure they should apply to a discussion before selecting a simple topic from their homework list. Then she coaches them as they learn how to stay within that structure. The first to talk should say how he/she feels; then the partner demonstrates that she/he heard what was said and then responds. Once both sides are represented they must find a compromise. This exercise is done with a simple issue (cleaning) and then a more difficult one (time with friends as opposed to spouse). |
