Description
Summary:The therapist works with a married woman in her thirties who has been suffering from bulimia for the past 19 years and wants help in overcoming the behavior. The client explains that she practices binge-eating and purging to regulate her weight and that she has only been able to control it during her pregnancies. In this third of six sessions, the client has brought in a piece of her writing about bulimia. She reads it out and the therapist then reads it back to her, eliciting her reactions and further discussion. They discuss the serious health effects of bulimia, including heart damage, and further explore the ways in which the disorder governs the client's life. The client demonstrates increased insight into issues of control that characterize this eating disorder, and notes that she has been somewhat better able to control the behavior herself. The therapist and client promise to continue to correspond by email.
