Description
Summary:In an initial psychotherapy session, clinical psychologist Dr. Nadya Fouad works with a young Chinese woman who has come to the United States for collegiate and graduate studies. Dr. Fouad offers occupational guidance in response to the client's uncertainty about her educational aspirations and occupational choice. The therapist uses active listening to provide the client space and time to tell her story, in which she describes a history of indecisiveness regarding her educational and career goals. In a culturally sensitive approach, the therapist honors the client's practical objectives and passionate aspirations in making a choice between a counseling career and a career in interior design. The therapist facilitates the client's identification of her own values and expression of the ways in which they differ from those of her parents and her Chinese culture of origin. Through this process, Dr. Fouad assists the client in considering creative ways to incorporate her passion for interior design into a counseling career.
