Description
Summary:Martin M. Antony uses cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques to work with a young woman who exhibits obsessive-compulsive behavior. Although she reports only mild levels of discomfort with these obsessions and compulsions, she would like to reduce their frequency. Antony focuses on the behavior modification aspect of CBT and helps the client examine her triggers and develop strategies for mitigating her compulsions. Using exposure therapy, Antony works with her to reduce her negative emotions, such as irritation and frustration, and guides her through response inhibition techniques to prevent her from succumbing to her compulsions. He reinforces the need to increase the intensity and frequency of these exposures over a prolonged period of time to enhance their efficacy. Antony develops a post-therapy plan for the client that includes homework, further exposures and response preventions, and cognitive therapy strategies.
