Summary:Dr. Leslie S. Greenberg conducts an initial couples therapy session with a young African American married couple. The couple presents with marital conflict centering on parenting issues. Dr. Greenberg uses an emotion-focused approach to empathically connect with each client and identify the feeling states that arise for each partner in the course of conflict. He works with the therapeutic process to attend to the emotional states of the couple in the session and identifies the core emotions behind their respective defensive responses to relational confict. Dr. Greenberg works to expand the partners' understanding and empathy for one another through respect for different ways of responding to conflict based on their respective family backgrounds. His use of self-disclosure facilitates the couple's comfort with more open expression of emotions.
