| Summary: | Tim Elliott works with a middle-aged woman who has been the caregiver to her parents for much of her life. When the client was a teen, she began to provide care for her mother (now deceased) who had developed a bad back and also suffered from bipolar disorder. When the client was in her 20s, her father became ill, and both parents were in and out of hospitals since that time. The client was forced to learn at a young age to balance her caregiving responsibilities with her work and schooling. Now her father is elderly and bedridden with emphysema and dementia. The client has had her own illness to cope with while at the same time serving as primary caregiver to her father. Elliott provides empathic support as the client tells her story, then discusses the importance of the client's coping strategies, which include hobbies that help lessen her stress (meditation, gardening).
