Description
Summary:The client, in his mid-20s, complains of social anxiety, shyness, nervousness in social situations. Dr. Anne Marie Albano reviews the client's typical anxiety-provoking situations and has the client rank them on a 0-to-9 scale (9=high anxiety). The client has sought help for this ongoing problem now because of the high degree of anxiety he's experiencing in obtaining job applications (8 on the scale) and in interviewing (9) during his job search. According to this scaling, Dr. Albano determines that the client suffers from generalized anxiety. She then provides the client with some psychoeducation about social anxiety using the biopsychosocial approach and explains the three pillars of behavior assessment in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)--what you think, what you feel, what you do--and has the client focus on the first and last in imagining how he could handle various anxiety-provoking social situations in the future. Dr. Albano concludes the session by assigning the client "homework"--simple goals and tasks to do for upcoming social situations without relying on maladaptive coping mechanisms (i.e., consuming alcohol excessively).
