| Item Description: | Title devised by cataloger. The Cushing Library/Tolkien Philology Coll. copy was acquired with a group of books from Tolkien's personal library, most with his signature and often with a date, of philological works by major, and mostly German, scholars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, including Brugmann, Jespersen, and Sievers. A number of notes in Tolkien's hand were laid into these volumes. See further Madeline J. Keyser's article, "Sixteen Philological Books and Notes from the Library of J.R.R.
