Item Description:Antiphonal, hymnal and gradual for the use of the Franciscans of the Province of Cartagena, Spain.
Remainder of title page: [Franciscan device] Opus dicatum Rmis. Patribus Ministro Commissarioque Gralibus Ord. S. P. N. S. Francisci. A. M. D. G. Ordinisque nostri exaltationem.
Includes feasts of Sts. Peter Baptist (canonized 1862) and Leonard of Port-Maurice (canonized 1867), suggesting a relatively late date in the 19th century.
Plainchant in square notes on 5-line staves. Some pieces written in 2 or 3 parts, indicated by notes in red. Hymns have time signatures.
Twelve pages tipped in before the title page, containing the "O antiphons for Advent, with colored initial letters. These are written on a staff with 4 lines, and on different paper than the main title. The initial "O's" are decorated in color.
Unnumbered pages of manuscript tipped in at back of volume have title, in red letters: Coleccion de Salves. Settings of the Salve Regina for 1-3 voices.
Original music composed by J.J. (José Juan) Santesteban (1809-1884), a composer and publisher of both sacred and secular works who was active in San Sebastián in the Basque Provinces, and who wrote a treatise on how to sing plainchant (Método teórico-práctico de canto-llano, 1864). The editor, Ramón Álvarez Lugin, also edited a Franciscan scientific-literary journal, Cosmos, which began publication in 1893.
