| Item Description: | The Colosseum, in Regent's Park, was built in 1827 to exhibit Thomas Hornor's "Panoramic view of London". The panorama was based on Hornor's drawings from the top of St. Paul's Cathedral, and painted by E.T. Parris. It was completed in November 1829. The Colosseum was sold in May 1843 to David Montague. It was remodelled according to the design of William Bradwell, who added an eastern entrance in Albany Street and an arched corridor inspired by one at the Vatican. The new owner announced a "Glypoteca, or Museum of Sculpture", displaying more than 180 works by leading sculptors. E.T. Parris repainted the "Grand Panorama of London" for the reopening in 1845, adding detail impossible in the limited time before the original opening. From 1848 a nocturnal panorama of Paris was shown and a lavishly decorated theatre was added, which showed a ten scene cyclorama of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Electronic resource. |
