| Item Description: | Title reads in reverse. Black guillemot in 2. is represented as "Do." Original copper printing plate from Selby's 2 volume work: Illustrations of British ornithology, published: Edinburgh : W.H. Lizars, 1833. "Selby produced his two-volume elephant folio production in response to John James Audubon's Birds of North America. It represents the first time that British birds were represented in life-sized illustrations. Its over two hundred plates, drawn mainly by Selby, were published in nineteen parts between 1821 and 1834. This copperplate depicts the black guillemot, a sea bird, in both its summer and winter plumage. After the plate was printed, each copy was colored by hand for inclusion in the volume. Intaglio printing, which includes copperplate and steel engraving, is the inverse of relief printing; an image is cut into the plate, which is covered in ink, and then the ink is wiped from its surface. The resulting image is transferred to the page with extensive pressure, which forces the paper into the incised lines."--P. 29, "A legacy of letters" exhibition catalog, published: [College Station, Tex.] : Cushing Memorial Library & Archives, Texas A&M University Libraries, 2012.
