Item Description:Reproduction of a line engraving originally by Allan Ramsay, in 1749.
Alexander Monro was the founder of the Edinburgh Medical School. To distinguish him as the first of three generations of physicians of the same name, he is known as "primus". He is part of the same Scottish clan as Harold Monro, British poet.
