| Item Description: | Originally published in 1825. Emblem of independent Mexico (an eagle on a cactus with a snake in its mouth, surrounded by a laurel wreath) on frontispiece, enclosed in decorative border. Title page vignette of a seal similar to the Great Seal of Virginia: "On one side of the seal the impression should be Virtue, the Genius of the State, dressed as an Amazon, resting on a spear with her left hand, and holding a drawn sword in her right hand, with Tyranny under her feet, a crown falling from his head, holding a broken chain in his left hand ... the words: 'Sit semper Tyrannis'." (Cf. Historical magazine, June 1859, pages 184-185.) Here, Virtue is portrayed as a conquistador and Tyranny as a bishop, and the motto is misspelled. The seal is set upon two cornucopias, with an eagle behind it. |
