Summary:	Study prepared by LRS for the Subcom on Science, Research and Development to provide background information for congressional consideration of Federal policies relating to the conduct and support of interdisciplinary research (IDR), particularly involving the social sciences. Examines: the scope and definition of IDR and the research process, including training and funding; the impact of interdisciplinary scientific research on scientific knowledge; problems of socially relevant interdisciplinary social science research; NSF program on IDR relevant to problems of our society; and proposals to establish alternate interdisciplinary educational and research programs or organizations to treat complex social problems.
