| Item Description: | Reproduction of the originals from the Burney Collection, the British Library (London). The "Committee" in imprint was the Committee for Conducting the Free-Press, a group of Dublin patriots led by the writer Henry Brooke. Charles Lucas was a major contributor to the newspaper until his death in 1771. Title from caption; title varies slightly. Imprint from undated colophon. Printers' names vary. At foot of page [1] in square brackets: Price one penny; price later increases to "Three half-pence." Originally a liberal paper which supported the Volunteer movement, the paper was taken over by Francis Higgins in 1782 and by 1784 was no longer an opposition newspaper but a voice for Dublin Castle. Higgins died in 1802, the newspaper eventually regained its independence. Includes editorial comments on political liberty by The Watchman, with extensive coverage of the Irish parliament, reports from the London gazette, British and European news, Dublin notes and advertisements.
