| Item Description: | Reproduction of the originals from the Burney Collection, the British Library (London). Editorship of early issues attributed to "B. D.", sometimes described as a competitor of Daniel Border; other sources interpret "B.D." as a Border pseudonym. The confusion over the identity of the editor apparently arises from a mis-interpretation of the publication dates of the first 21 numbers. Cf. Frank. Title from caption. Other title information fluctuates slightly. Below title of Numb. 1: March 27. Imprimatur G. Mabbot. Issues dated according to Lady Day dating. Most 1649 issues have imprints reading: Printed by Bernard Alsop (Alsop was Daniel Border's printer). Year dates of coverage incorrect in the first twenty-one issues; actual year of issue: 1648. Correct date confirmed by text of first issue; cf. Nelson and Seccombe. Some issues have misprinted coverage dates for the days of the month. This record subsumes all variants of individual issues of this title, as recorded by Nelson & Seccombe. Publication ceased in October 1649 as a result of the Licensing Act of 1649, which suppressed the entire licensed press. Electronic resource. |
