| Item Description: | Caption title, page [1] of third numbering: Alexandri Cuningamii [sic] Emendationes in P. Virgilium Maronem. No date given in piece. Not in ESTC. According to the Edinburgh, City of Print website, the brothers John and Donald Cameron took over Nisbet & MacNiven, papermakers and wholesale stationers in Edinburgh, in 1840. No listing for a C. Cameron. The Scottish Book Trade Index (online) lists a John Cameron as a wholesale stationer in Edinburgh beginning in 1836-1837, and Cowan Cameron, paper warehouse.in Glasgow, 1835. Pages 1 and 2 (first and second numberings) wanting. Similar to edition published by G. Hamilton & J. Balfour, 1743. The Cushing Library/Lit./Mitchell copy contains the bookplate of David Garnett (Hilton Hall Huntingdon). The Cushing Library/Lit./Mitchell copy contains two slips with researcher's notes. Inscribed in pencil on front fly-leaf: "This Virgil belonged Exemplar to my great great uncle Jeremiah Garnett, who became the second editor of The Manchester Guardian. DG" [David Garnett, the writer]. |
