| Summary: | Traces the lives of a traditional peasant family facing new economic rules. It is the story of the Zhou family who are well known in their small farming community in southern China. Unable to adapt to "modern times" the father runs into a heavy debt leaving the family in great financial difficulty. Turning to his daughters and sons-in-law for support, he receives a cold welcome. After several disputes his authority is questioned; his old ways of running a family are clearly not adapted to the challenges of modern society. At the same time, one of the family's couples is on the brink of separation due to an extra-marital affair. The family is literally falling apart. Nevertheless, the film ends on a positive note: the arrival of a new granddaughter forces the family to reunite and becomes the start of a double reconciliation. |
