| Item Description: | Included with the collection is the bookseller's description. The collection is broken down into five groups of correspondence. Group A (with dates between 10 February 1935 and 11 October 1938) consists of five autograph letters signed, four autograph notes signed, two typed letters signed, and an autograph postcard signed (initials) addressed to Owen Rutter of the Golden Cockerel Press, largely on literary matters, submitting work for an exhibition, discussing publication terms, etc. Also included are six carbon copies (unsigned) of letters written on behalf of the Golden Cockerel Press addressed to Coppard, as well as an autograph letter signed on decorated Golden Cockerel Press letterhead from Christopher Sanford to Owen Rutter relating to Coppard. Group B (with dates between 22 June 1925 and 16 November 1927) contains five autograph letters signed and addressed to [R.E.] Blackshaw, presumably a collector. The original holograph mailing envelopes are included. With what is presumably a "specimen" of manuscript mentioned within one of the letters. Group C (with dates between18 November 1928 and 12 March 1936) contains eleven autograph letters signed to Coppard's eventual bibliographer, bookseller Gilbert H. Fabes. The letters contain discussions including agreeing to autograph copies of his books, lecture arrangements, sending thanks for books, writing of his travel plans, etc. Together with a typed letter from Fabes to a Mrs. Cohn offering the material for sale. Group D (with dates between 7 February 1926 and 15 March 1932) contains eleven autograph letters signed (all signed "Lepracaun"). The letters make up a quirky series of affectionate, whimsical, and somewhat intimate correspondence between Coppard and a Miss Marie Gallagher. Group E (with dates between 17 August 1921 and 27 September 1952) contains correspondence with various recipients comprising: one autograph letter signed (initials only, 1.5 pages) to "Dear John," three autograph notes signed an autograph letter (4 pages) signed to a Mr. Daws (Dans?), one autograph letter signed (1 page) to "Dear Heath," one autograph letter signed (1.5 pages) to an unidentified woman, one autograph letter signed (1 page) to "Dear Miss Mrs. Madame?," autograph note signed (1 page) to a Mr. Partridge, one autograph postcard signed (1 page) to The Charles Bookshop, one autograph note signed (0.5 page) to an unidentified recipient, and one autograph letter signed (1 page) to Mr. Harding-Edgar. |
