| Abstract: | The distributional pattern of the index species for the "Vaqueros Stage" of the Pacific coast provincial time-stratigraphic classification, Turritella inezana Conrad, is in agreement with earlier postulates of large post-early Miocene right lateral slip on the San Andreas fault. Inferred distribution of early Miocene seaways and embayments, though somewhat speculative, strengthens the thesis of large laterial dislocation. Reexamination of the biostratigraphic basis of Pacific coast mid-Tertiary megafaunal correlation indicates that the "Blakeley Stage" of Washington and the "Vaqueros Stage" of California are at least in part coeval. |
